Tattoo aftercare

How to care for your new tattoo.

1. Remove the bandage.

2. Wash the tattoo quickly and gently a few times daily with mild soap (I recommend Dial Gold antibacterial liquid soap), then pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not scrub.

3. With clean hands, apply a minimal amount of A&D Ointment or Aquaphor to keep the tattoo moist for the first day. Only use a very small amount. The tattoo should not appear greasy; too much ointment is not a good thing. Your new tattoo needs to breathe. On day 2, switch to a fragrance-free hypoallergenic lotion (I recommend Lubriderm) for two weeks.

4. While healing, do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight, swimming pools, dust, dirt, pets, hot tubs, baths, long showers, tight or dirty clothes, or steam. Also, avoid sweating and letting water hit your new tattoo directly while showering. Keep it clean to prevent infection.

5. The tattoo should not scab but will peel as if you have sunburn. Avoid picking at, scratching, or peeling your tattoo, as it can remove color.

6. For a long-lasting tattoo with bright color, always protect it from the sun.

7. Remember, tattoos are open wounds. If you notice any signs of infection, seek medical attention immediately. The sooner an infection is addressed, the better.
